Confused About When to Use 'Always', 'Usually', 'Often', etc. in Daily Routines

Hi everyone! I'm writing about my daily habits for an English homework assignment, but I'm not sure when to use words like 'always', 'usually', 'often', 'sometimes', and 'never'. For example, should I say 'I always eat breakfast at 7am' or 'I usually eat breakfast at 7am'? Also, if I only skip breakfast once a week, is 'often' or 'sometimes' better?

Could you explain how to pick the right word for how frequently something happens? Here are a few sentences I'm working on:

  • I _______ go jogging in the morning.
  • I _______ watch TV before bed.
Which word fits best in these cases? Thank you!

Context:
I'm writing for a beginner English class in the US.

To choose the right frequency word, think of them like steps on a scale:

  • Always: 100% of the time
  • Usually: About 80–90% of the time
  • Often: About 60–80% of the time
  • Sometimes: About 30–50% of the time
  • Never: 0% of the time

Let's use this with examples:

  • "I always eat breakfast at 7am." (You never skip, not even once.)
  • "I usually eat breakfast at 7am." (You might skip once in a while—like once a week.)

For skipping breakfast once a week (6 days breakfast, 1 day skipped), usually is best. Often means you skip more often than once a week.

For your sentences:

  • "I often go jogging in the morning." (If you do this most days, but not all.)
  • "I sometimes watch TV before bed." (If you watch TV a few times a week, but not every day.)

Practice for yourself:
Try choosing a frequency word for this: If you never eat dessert after lunch, what should go in the blank? "I _______ eat dessert after lunch." (Correct answer: never.)

When writing about daily habits, compare similar sentences to choose the best frequency word:

  1. Use always if something happens every single time:
  • "I always brush my teeth before bed." (100% of nights)
  1. Use usually if it happens almost every time, but not every day:
  • "I usually brush my teeth before bed." (Maybe you forget once in a while)
  1. Use often for something that happens many times, but not most days:
  • "I often eat fruit for a snack."
  1. Use sometimes if it happens now and then:
  • "I sometimes read the newspaper in the morning."
  1. Use never if it does not happen at all:
  • "I never go jogging at night."

Guided practice: Read your own sentences out loud and ask: "Is this true every day, most days, or only sometimes?" Adjust your word to fit how often the habit happens.

To select the right frequency word, ask these questions about your routine:

  1. Does this happen every single time? → Use always
  2. Does it happen almost every time (just a few times not)? → Use usually
  3. Does it happen many times, but not most of the time? → Use often
  4. Does it happen just from time to time? → Use sometimes
  5. Does it never happen? → Use never

For example:

  • "I usually do my homework after school." (Most days, but not 100%)
  • "I never drink coffee in the evening." (0% of evenings)

Corrective feedback:
If you find you've said "I always ..." but it is not strictly every time, change it to "usually." It keeps your sentences true!

Try this: Write three more habits from your day and use a different frequency word for each one. Double-check by asking yourself those questions first.
